Monique van Genderen describes herself as a non-objective abstractionist; she creates her own painterly language that is concerned with surface, finish, and continued interventions within the subject of painting. Her works often suggest an abstracted landscape due to the breadth of field, biomorphic forms, and interplay of colors and shapes. Van Genderen examines the objecthood of paintings by creating installations of works that reside in and respond to their architectural environments.
Monique van Genderen received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, CA) and her BFA from the University of California, San Diego. A recipient of the Chinati Foundation Artist-in-Residence Program (2005), van Genderen has presented solo exhibitions internationally, including at Miles McEnery Gallery (New York, NY), Galerie Richar  (Paris, France), Galerie Michael Janssen (Berlin, Germany), and Vielmetter (Los Angeles).  Van Genderen’s work has been featured in exhibitions at institutions including the Albertina Museum (Vienna, Austria); Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, CA); New Museum (New York, NY); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (CA); and Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (Switzerland). Her work is held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Albertina Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Minnesota Museum of American Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among others. She has received major public art commissions from the U.S. General Services Administration’s Arts in Architecture Program, Murals for La Jolla, and the West Hollywood 1% for the Arts program. Van Genderen lives and works between Los Angeles and San Diego, California.
